Bilingual Education in the Classroom

Additive Bilingual Education Approach

**Students’ native language must be used and their culture included in the teaching methods.

  • Group learning: cooperative learning, scaffolding.
  • Incorporates both school and community.
  • Interactive and meaningful literacy experiences:
    • Role play
    • Writing dialogue
    • Open-ended discussions
  • Oral activities to develop both spoken and written English
    • BICS: Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (peer communication)
    • CALP: Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (academic communication)

Learning Environment

**According to one LEP teacher the learning environment should be “perceived as safe for students, a support system – so they feel free to take risks, inclusive, realistic, and contemplative, and where knowledge is constructed.” (Torres, “Teacher-Researchers entering into the world of LEP students”)

**It should meet the needs of the student and provide that student with room to grow and play an active role in.
