Definitions

English Language Learners (ELL)  - Students that are in the process of learning English.

 

Linguistically Diverse Students – Students who speak more than one language.

 

Limited English Proficiency (LEP) – Students who do not speak fluent English.

 

Bilingual – A person who can speak two languages fluently is bilingual.

 

Bicultural – A person who relates to two distinct cultures.

 

Bidialectal – A person who is proficient in or using two dialects of the same language.
 
Additive Bilingual Education - Uses student's first language and builds onto it.
 
Subtractive Bilingual Education - Only uses the second language.
